American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification

Participants will be, by class end, certified in CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, AED, and Lifeguard Certification.

After successful completion of the class, all participants will be considered for lifeguard and swim instructor positions available at the Island Recreation Center- pending an interview with the Aquatics Director.


All lifeguard certification candidates must pass a swim test*. Candidates must come to the Island Rec Center pool anytime 11am-2pm the week of 9/17- 9/22 to complete the test with the instructor.

Cost for the class is $150. A refund of $50 will be given to any candidate who takes a job with Island Recreation Center.

* Swim Test:
1.) 300 yard swim combination of freestyle and breaststroke.
2.) 50 yard swim to retrieve a sunken object in 8 feet of water in under 1 minute 40 seconds.

 

First Aid, CPR and AED Courses

American Red Cross first aid, CPR and AED programs are designed to help you learn and remember valuable lifesaving skills and knowledge. We translate the consensus of medical science into practical, easy-to-understand information for the American public. Red Cross first aid, CPR and AED programs are available for any age group and can be tailored to the needs of specific groups and individuals. Pet First Aid (4 hours)
Gain the knowledge and skills necessary to care for cats and dogs with rescue breathing emergencies, cardiac emergencies and general wound care.

 Standard First Aid (Adult CPR and First Aid) (6 hours)
This class will provide you with the knowledge and skills necessary to prevent, recognize, and provide basic care for injuries and sudden illnesses until advanced medical personnel arrive and take over.  Adult CPR and First Aid Basics are covered.

Adult CPR with AED (4 hours)
Train lay responders to
overcome any reluctance to act in emergency situations and to recognize and care for life-threatening respiratory or cardiac emergencies in adults.

Infant and Child CPR (5 1/2 hours)
Train lay responders to overcome any reluctance to act in emergency situations and to recognize and care for life-threatening respiratory or cardiac emergencies in infants and children ages 12 and under.

Infant and Child CPR w/ First Aid (7 hours)
Designed for childcare providers, teachers, parents and others who care for children, this course teaches how to recognize and care for breathing and cardiac emergencies and how to use the EMS system effectively.  In addition, it provides you with the knowledge and skills necessary to prevent, recognize and provide basic care for injuries and sudden illnesses.  Infant - up to 1 year of age.  Child - ages 1-8.

Blood Borne Pathogens (2 hours)
Trains and provides individuals with an understanding of the intent of the BBP regulation issued by OSHA; how Bloodborne pathogens are spread; how to help prevent exposure incidents by following work practice controls, using engineering controls and personal protective equipment, practicing good personal hygiene and properly cleaning and disinfecting equipment and supplies; and to recognize, report and follow up on employee exposures to infectious materials.

CPR for the Professional Rescuer (8 hours)
Teaches Professional Rescuers the skills needed to respond appropriately to breathing and cardiac emergencies.  This includes the use of an AED to care for victims of cardiac arrest.

Babysitter Training (7 hours)
This course will provide individuals aged 11-15 with the information and skills necessary to provide safe and responsible care for children in the absence of parents or adult guardians.  This training will help participants develop skills in leadership and professionalism; basic care; safety and safe play; and first aid.

Wilderness First Aid Basics (16 hours)
This class covers assessment and urgent first aid techniques, but not in-depth CPR. Basic first aid skills are covered, making this course appropriate for anyone regardless of experience level. No prerequisites are required. A certification can be issued that has an expiration of 3 years and serves as a Basic First Aid certification as well. A minimum age of 15 is recommended for participants due to the serious nature of the course and scenarios.

First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor
A multi-day course to train instructor candidates to teach basic-level American Red Cross First Aid, CPR and AED courses for lay responders.
